New York City

Derek and I have our 5th Anniversary coming up in November. We are celebrating with a trip to New York City and our plane departs next week. We have a pretty good idea of which major sites to see (Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Broadway shows, Rockefeller Center, etc.) We also have some fabulous food recommendations from LJ. I'm looking for any bits of advice that you are aware of. For instance, there is apparently a red booth somewhere that you can bid for cheap Broadway tickets. There is also a webcam where you can show up and have your picture online - if you are there at the "right" time then it will be archived. Do you know of a great place to eat that we just CANNOT miss? Should we avoid a certain place at a certain time of day? Any good info would be appreciated. Your deadline is Thursay, September 20th. GO!

Oh Jenny do I have some food places for you! Malaysia Grill is on Broadway and West 104th Street. They closed to reopen up there (they used to be on 87th and broadway) but it is handsdown my favorite food in New York City. I miss it so much. Get the mango chicken and coconut rice and the pad thai. And the fried spring rolls. You won't regret it.
There is also a FANTASTIC cuban restaurant on West 96th and Amsterdam called Cafe Con Leche. Get the coconut halibut. It literally melts in your mouth. Oh my goodness I'm so hungry just thinking about it.
This time of year you really should also make some time to head up to the cloisters up in Washington Heights. Depending on where you're staying it might be a bit of a treck but worth it this time of year with the fall colors. It's part of the metropolitan museum of art and gets rave reviews.
As far as the TKTS booth for half priced tickets, make sure you get there early and know that they only take cash. I would also do your homework about the shows because a lot of "great" broadway can be pretty raunch-a-rific. Look on broadway.com to check out the plot lines and if you are wondering about it, I would call the box office (most have a 800 number and they are listed on the website) and ask them directly. Even half priced tickets are too expensive to buy for a show you may want to walk out on. Wicked is amazing and really worth standing in line every day for the lottery which I think usually starts when the box office opens. I'd call the box office because that is a show not to be missed. Amazing. I cried every time I saw it.
And since its your anniversary, make time to just walk around central park together, you can go to one of the little deli markets right near the park and get a little picnic lunch and eat by Bathesda fountain or something. If you go to the boathouse you can rent a little boat and float around the river for an hour and its great.
If you want more info on any of these ideas or more ideas, just email me (tyra413@gmail.com) and I would be happy to give you the scoop:) Have so much fun! This is my favorite time of year in NYC!
Have fun, Jen! You guys deserve it!
We went to NYC 14 years ago... lots has changed. The best advice I can give you is to not be afraid to do tourist-y things... and to take tour buses!! We walked EVERYWHERE - and it made the trip less enjoyable. Tour bus! Worth it! Plus, you get more free information from the guides that you don't have to research yourself! Time saver! :) Have fun! I'm envious!
Wow, how fun! I've never been, so I have no NYC advice for you...except, have a fabulous time and I can't believe you're not letting me watch your kids.
Jenny--what a fabulous idea! I've only been to NY briefly, but it is so fun and interesting. Will & I are big museum nerds, so I'll put in my plug for going to the MET. It is right outside of central park and a beautiful walk through all the richie rich townhomes on 5th Ave. The Ellis Island Museum is also pretty cool and has a display from the church where people can look up ancestors who came to the US via the Island. Have so much fun!!
Oh Jenny I wish I would have looked at your blog sooner. Sal is from NY---Harlem that is and he could have told me some places to go. We went there last year and did at fast hike through the city. All I can say is DEFINATELY have a hotdog with ALL the fixings, and DEFINATELY have some pizza because you will never taste any other pizza without comparing it to the "one you had in NY".....NY pizza is the best!! It was great to be there with Sal because he was like a tour guide, everywhere we went he would be like..."oh and this is where they film such and such movie with so and so in it." It was a lot of fun. We have plans to do Christmas in NY this year....his family still lives there. Have fun and enjoy the many different kinds of people and tall buildings. Oh and one more thing......Hail a taxi cab....and ride the subway!! Both very fun things to do.
