How I Lost the "Mother of the Year" Award.... Again
Recently, our dear neighbor passed away unexpectedly. He was like another grandfather for my kids - they ADORED Bob. Tonight, his family had a party for him as a celebration of his life. It was at a local clubhouse and Ryan was SO excited to go to Bob's party - he'd been talking about it all week long.
During the part of the party where his family was telling stories they remembered about him, I was preoccupied with listening while my kids were running around with other children having fun. Ryan came over after a few minutes and said, "I found the chocolate cake!" Then he told me that he had gone looking for the dessert table and got a drink of "something that wasn't good for my body. But, when I could tell it wasn't good for me, I just stopped drinking it and put it down."
Oh, awesome. The 5 year old just had his first margarita! In his defense, it was in an Igloo and looked just like lemonade. I thought it was actually very interesting that he could tell by tasting that it was something he shouldn't be drinking. I don't think he had more than a sip and thankfully, it didn't seem to get him tipsy or anything. I was a little concerned since he's a KID and who knows how alcohol could affect such a small body. Turned into a learning experience though - for all of us.
Where was his mother???
**I'd like to add - it is at least saying SOMETHING that the boy knew he could tell me about it and not try to hide it from me.**

You took your kid to a party with alcohol? Really? Don't we tell the youth not to attend parties with alcohol? ;-) Don't feel too bad. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened to me someday.
Good for Ryan, though. I am proud of him. You are still a pretty rockin' mother in my mind.
Jen - If anything this should tell you that you ARE a good mom. He knew it wasn't for him.....you've taught him something that sunk in.. Good job!
I totally agree with Melissa. It shows what a great mom you are. He has been taught. Amazing!
My mouth is seriously hanging open. I love that he knew it wasn't good for him. But i LOVE LOVE that he told you about it. You most definitely did not lose the award...
