How Do You Put YOUR Family at Risk?

My husband keeps telling me that something HAS to change. He's right.
I have this disease where I have to light the burners on the stove at the highest possible temperature when I am heating up water. I want it to boil as fast as it can. Unfortunately, this has become a hazard to my family because I also have another disease. It's the I-get-so-easily-distracted disease. Combining the two can be lethal. It causes me to put water on the stovetop, turn the burner on it's maximum setting, and then while I'm waiting for it to boil, I'll start a different project and forget that I put water on the stove at all. Then, a while later I'll remember and jump up to find that there is no longer water in my pot. And my pot no longer has the copper bottom attached to it anymore. And it is burnt black beyond possible future use. And then I sigh a sigh of relief that I dodged the "burn-our-house-down" bullet yet again.
My current count is 4 pots that have suffered this fate.
But, I have discovered a way to help me combat this terrible habit. All I have to do is turn on the timer whenever I am cooking anything. That way, even if I walk away, I have something that will re-focus me before it becomes too late.
How have you dodged a bullet?

That is so scary!!I have to use the timer too. My closest call was when I put a pyrex dish fresh from the oven on a burner and turned it on (instead of the back burner that had the pot to boil). Since my stove is electric, I didn't notice until it was too late, I moved it to the stove top and it exploded sending shards of glass, egg and sausage everywhere! It burned holes in our vinyl. That's when Matt decided I needed a destressing intervention!
I'm glad you guys have all survived so far!
Holy Cow Jen! I just did this for the first time two nights ago. What was I thinking? Got distracted too. I'll have to think about my "risky" actions..unfortunately, I think I have too many to mention..or want to admit too.
When I saw your photo - I thought - wow - that looks like a new pot. I leaned into the computer to see it more closely. Yep - looks brand new. I thought - this girl is cooking up something great! Leaned back - and then discovered it WAS A NEW PAN. The FOURTH one! I love the lessons we learn that don't hurt a body. A simple timer. Gotta love that story. Thanks Jen. Been there...done that!
4 times!!!!??? I've done it once but the smell alone was enough to keep me from doing it again.
Last week I dodged a bullet while cooking some cheesy toast in my toaster oven. I turned it off to put the kids down for a nap. When I finally remembered it was in there, I noticed my toast was on fire. Not a scary, huge, smoking fire, but there was definitely a flame on the bread.
I have the same problem. And the newest one is putting something on a very low heat to keep warm if it finishes before josh gets home from work. THen we eat,and it's then while cleaning up I realize the burner is still on, just so low that you can barely see it. YIKES. since josh is in the fire sprinkler industry, anytime he finds one of my problems. He tells me it's people like me that give him a job. Good idea with the timer.
I totally busted a gut when I read this post because that is so me! I absolutely HAVE to set a timer or I really will burn the house down. And fortunately for me, the timer I use doesn't just go off once and then stop. It keeps going off until you get up and turn it off. Thank goodness!
I am just like this. I always get things cooking and get distracted. Too much multi-tasking.
